Various observations on these Saints whom we give The sacred Calendars suggest these Martyrs to us. The Martyrology which is called most ancient and marked with the name of St. Jerome the priest, in d'Achery, vol. 4 of the Spicilegium, expresses their names as above; but not Florentini, who records them thus: In Sicily, the birthday of the saints Euplus, Joseph, Felix, Secundus, without Julius: but in the same place in the notes it is added from the Corbie Martyrology: In Sicily, the birthday of the saints Euplus, Joseph, Felix, Secundulus, Julius. In the same notes these two are marked from the Martyrology of St. Willibrord: In Sicily, of Euplus, Joseph: to which is subjoined immediately the announcement In Apulia, of Felix, Secundus. It is worth adding to these the following observations in Florentini: For Secundus the Corbie M. reads Secundulus, and it exhibits Julius over and above our codices. The most ancient M., often more accurate in distinguishing places, assigns to Sicily only Euplus and Joseph; but to Apulia Felix and Secundus.
[2] observations. Of Euplius and Serapion, confessors at Catania in Sicily, Ferrari treats, who may be consulted at the XI of September. But he does not seem to be the same Euplus, from his companion Serapion, not Joseph, and from the title of confessor. Another Euplus, a deacon, we have reported at the day XII of August. His Acts have been illustrated at the said day in our work, vol. 2 of that month, from p. 710. From the above announcements the Reichenau Martyrology, published by us, differs, which has thus: And in Sicily, of Eopolus, Joseph. In Apulia, of Felix. The Rheinau one, also published by us, differs from that, saying: And in Sicily, of Eopolus: to which it does not add the two others just mentioned. But in Greven, Joseph is set down without place and without companions. But from the fact that SS. Felix and Secundulus or Secundus are referred to different places, it does not follow that their number is to be multiplied.
