Tomis, Tomi, or Tomos an ancient city on the shore of the Black Sea, in modern Bulgaria, was once ascribed to lower Moesia: where also Pontic Scythia was, from which and the neighbouring places the Goths, in some Getae, came forth, who in Theophanes are sometimes called Goths, sometimes Scythians. Among these were many Martyrs, whose multitude sufficiently proves, that the Christian and orthodox faith there flourished. In four copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology and in another codex of the Queen of Sweden, these are reckoned in the second place after the Alexandrian Martyrs with these words: "At Tomi, or Thomis, of Helias, Lucianus, Zoticus, Martialis, Victurus, and Murina." The same is read in Notker. But in place of Helias, Victurus, and Murina, is also written Elias and Eleas, Victor and Maurina. In the Corbey copy printed at Paris is added the name of Servulus. Of these the two former Elias and Lucianus are referred in the Mss. Trier of S. Maximinus, Cologne of S. Mary ad Gradus, and Corbey not yet printed: with the place of contest omitted, in the Mss. Augsburg of S. Ulrich and Paris of Labbé. To these with the place of contest is added Martialis in the Ms. Reichenau. But Helias alone is mentioned in the Mss. Aachen and Rhinau and the Auctary of Greven to Usuard. Of Elias, with others ascribed to Rome by Galesinius, in the preceding class of Martyrs we treated. So also Martialis and Zoticus in the small Trier Ms. of S. Maximinus are attributed to the African region, drawn here improperly from the following Martyrs. In the same way to Africa are ascribed Martialis and Lucianus, or Litianus in the Mss. Arras, Tournai and Laon, as we indicated in the supplement of genuine Bede. Lucianus also and Zoticus, mixed with others, are mentioned in the Ms. of Liège of the Cathedral Church of S. Lambert.

In the third place are celebrated in the ancient copies of the Hieronymian Martyrology these Martyrs, and in Blume, Lucca and Corbey printed at Paris, with these words: "In Africa of Sacci, Julius, Daama, Carpia." Which same things are had in the ancient codex of the Queen of Sweden, which Holstenius praises: but there in the third place Damia is read. In the Epternac Ms., with Saccus omitted, these are mentioned: "In Africa of Julius, Damus, Carpia and other four hundred." In the Reichenau Ms. these are handed down: "In Africa of Saccus, Carpia." The names of Saccus and Julius are referred in the Mss. Aachen and Paris of Labbé: but of Saccus alone in the Augsburg Ms. of S. Ulrich, in whose place is read in the ancient Casino Ms., "of S. Julius Martyr, and of many others," whom we have already said were four hundred.
